Paklenica was the location I visited many times throughout the past decade. When I was attending Alpine school in Željezničar (hiking association from Zagreb), many of the climbing sessions were done in Paklenica National Park. Apart from being the most famous place for rock climbing in Croatia, Paklenica is also a paradise for hiking. This article will be a Paklenica National Park hiking guide that aims to inform you about anything related to hiking in Paklenica and present you with some images and videos from this stunning place.
Paklenica National Park is part of the Velebit Mountain range, and as such it has some of the best hiking trails in Croatia. Known for its magnificent canyons, lush forests, and beautiful hiking trails, Paklenica offers a great experience for anyone visiting. If you choose to visit this national park in Croatia, you’ll see that there are some other attractions such as military tunnels embedded into the steep cliffs as well as some nice cave systems like Manita Peć.
Let’s venture together into the Paklenica National Park hiking experience.
Why Hike in Paklenica National Park?
Paklenica National Park is one of your favorite national parks in Croatia. All of them are beautiful, really are, but since we’re into hiking and huge mountain lovers, Paklenica is somehow very dear to us. Not to mention that I spent a lot of time there during the Alpine school and really got connected to it. Later on, I passed my First Aid Course for the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service there as well. Just another step I did in Paklenica.
A few years ago, when we started our YouTube channel, we decided to do an episode about Paklenica, and the clips we’re going to put in this article are filmed then. We never finished and published that video, but we still got to hike through Paklenica and ended our day drinking cold beer at one of the mountain huts.

Here’s what’s so good about Paklenica National Park hiking:
- Two Stunning Canyons:
- Velika Paklenica (Large Paklenica) and Mala Paklenica (Small Paklenica) offer unique hiking experiences with dramatic cliffs and serene trails. I passed through both of them and Mala Paklenica was my first encounter with this amazing landscape. Velika Paklenica Canyon is something out of this world.
- Diverse Trails:
- Paklenica is full of hiking trails ranging from easy walks to challenging ascents. No matter what hiking experience you’re looking for, you can find it in Paklenica. Ascent through Mala Paklenica Canyon is a bit harder than through Velika Paklenica.
- Wildlife and Nature:
- This national park in Croatia is home to rare plants, birds of prey, mountain goats, and many other animals that give another dimension to this landscape. There are some more dangerous animals like snakes and ticks as well.
- Cultural Landmarks:
- Explore ancient mills, traditional mountain shelters, and historic paths along the hiking trails.
- Military Bunkers:
- Paklenica has old military bunkers that were abandoned for a long time and are now being rebuilt to serve another purpose. You are able to visit them through the visit to Paklenica National Park. They now serve as an interpretation center through which you can learn more about Paklenica, its landscape, and its biodiversity.
- Mountain Stream:
- A stream that flows through Paklenica makes it much more attractive for hiking. Unfortunately, this stream is non-existent during the hot summer months. If you are to go to Paklenica National Park hiking in the spring, there is a chance that this stream will be flowing.

Yes, Croatia is most visited during summer which is the hottest period of the year, and it’s perfectly fine to hike during this period (starting as early as possible), but if you’re looking for a multi-day hike or want to explore more hiking trails in Croatia, then summer might not be the best time of the year for visiting Croatia.
Here’s what to expect out of each period when it comes to Paklenica National Park hiking:
- Spring (April-June):

- Early morning or late afternoon hikes are recommended to avoid the midday heat if you plan to visit Paklenica during the hot summer months. A lot of people hike in Paklenica during this period and enjoy it a lot. Don’t let the heat discourage you, just be prepared.
- Autumn (September-October):
- Cooler temperatures and vibrant foliage make perfect hiking conditions. Similar to spring, but with a completely different vibe. We adore hiking in Croatia during autumn.
- Winter (November-March):
- During the winter period at Paklenica snow may cover higher trails, making them inaccessible without the proper alpine equipment, but lower trails usually remain open. The mountain stream that flows through Paklenica National Park is full of water.
