We are going to start with a section for anyone who doesn’t have enough time to go through the article (which won’t be too long, only necessary information):
For the best overall weather and outdoor activities: May, June, September, and early October.
For Dubrovnik with fewer crowds and lower prices: From late October to April.
For beach lovers and nightlife: July and August.
For cultural events and festivals: Summer months and December for Christmas markets.
For budget travelers: November to March.
Dubrovnik Through the Seasons
The previous section already gave you a nice overview of which period in Dubrovnik is good for what things. But let us explore further each of these periods so you can decide when to visit Dubrovnik more easily.
Spring (March – May): The Best Balance
This period offers perfect options for sightseeing without the usual Dubrovnik crowds. The weather is also very pleasant for all kinds of outdoor activities.
Why Visit Dubrovnik in Spring?
Mild weather (15-25°C / 59-77°F), perfect for exploring without the summer heat.
Way fewer tourists compared to peak season, making enjoying the city much easier.
Nature awakes, with blooming flowers and lush landscapes all around the city.
Outdoor activities like hiking, sea kayaking , and day trips are perfect for this period.
Lower airplane fares and accommodation prices.
Downsides:
The Adriatic Sea is still a bit cold for swimming in March and early April.
Some boat tours and island excursions may not be fully operational until May.
Summer (June – August): Peak Season & Hot Temperatures
We believe that at least 90% of the visitors come to Dubrovnik in this period. At least it feels that way. And we can’t blame anyone for choosing to visit Dubrovnik at this time. The city is full of life, everything is open, and the sea is perfect for swimming. Sounds like a great vacation. It can be. If you don’t mind the crowds and the heat. Heat you can escape, but can you escape the crowds in Dubrovnik ?
Why Visit in Summer?
Sunny weather (28-35°C / 82-95°F) and warm sea temperatures make it perfect for beach lovers .
Best nightlife and entertainment , with bars, clubs, and lots of open-air events.
Game of Thrones and history tours are in full swing.
Major events like the Dubrovnik Summer Festival (July – August) bring live music, theater, and performances.
Activities such as kayaking in Dubrovnik are best enjoyed in this period.
Downsides:
It can become extremely crowded , especially for cruise ship passengers during midday.
Expensive accommodations and flights.
Heat can be intense , especially in the Old Town where stone streets trap the heat. During heatwaves, temperatures can go almost to 40°C (104°F).
Best Tips for Visiting Dubrovnik in Summer:
Start exploring early in the morning or after 5 PM to avoid the worst crowds. We love Dubrovnik from 6 AM to 9 AM.
Escape to beaches, islands, and coastal areas during the midday heat.
Book accommodations and activities in advance to secure your place.
Autumn (September – November): Ideal Period for Relaxed Travel
We love Autumn in Dubrovnik and can’t really decide between Autumn and Spring. Autumn might be the winner simply because of one thing – a still warm sea which is perfect for swimming. However, September and October in Dubrovnik tend to be a bit more crowded than April and May, for example.
Why Visit in Autumn?
September and early October are perfect for warm weather (20-28°C / 68-82°F) with fewer tourists, although a bit more than in the spring period, but way less than in the summer period.
The sea is still warm enough for swimming until mid-October.
More affordable hotel prices and flights compared to summer.
Vineyards on the Pelješac Peninsula are in the harvest season, making it a great time for wine tours and visits to some of the most famous wineries in Croatia.
Downsides:
Some beach bars and seasonal attractions start closing by late October.
November in Dubrovnik can be rainy and cooler (10-18°C / 50-64°F).
Winter (December – February): A Peaceful and Festive Escape
If you want to completely avoid the usual crowds in Dubrovnik, then this is the period for you. Of course, there are many downsides to this period too. It’s the time of the year when Dubrovnik rests from the very busy season. If visiting in this period, we recommend December so you can enjoy in unique Dubrovnik Christmas market.
Why Visit in Winter?
Dubrovnik is almost empty , allowing for a peaceful and authentic experience .
Christmas markets in December bring a magical atmosphere with lights, concerts, and festive food.
Lower prices on accommodations and flights.
A great time for photography , as you can capture the Old Town essence without the usual crowds.
Downsides:
Cold and rainy weather (5-15°C / 41-59°F) will limit outdoor activities.
Most restaurants and attractions are closed from January to early March .
Not ideal for beach lovers , as the Adriatic is too cold for swimming.
When is the Best Month to Visit Dubrovnik?
So to summarize, here are the best periods in Dubrovnik regarding your preferences:
May & June: Best for warm but not hot weather. Great for outdoor activities and enjoying in relative peace with fewer crowds.
July & August: Perfect for sun and sea lovers. Dubrovnik in this period is extremely crowded and expensive.
September & Early October: The best mix of warm weather and fewer visitors. The best thing is the fact that the sea is still great for swimming.
November – March: Best for budget travelers and those who enjoy a quieter, historical experience. Unfortunately, the tourist offer is very limited in this period.
