We adore Blidinje Nature Park and we visit it at least 2 times a year. We would visit it even more, but there are a lot of other places to discover and explore. We hope that this article will make you visit this stunning landscape and enjoy it as much as we do. We’ll cover a lot of different aspects of Blidinje and, together with the images, this article will let you know all you need to know about this place.
Blidinje Nature Park is a breathtaking expanse of natural beauty located in the mountainous region of Herzegovina , between the Čvrsnica and Vran mountains. It’s a place famous for its beautiful landscapes, alpine air, and unspoiled wilderness. Blidinje is a paradise for all sorts of travelers – nature lovers, hikers, and anyone looking to experience authentic highland life in the Balkans.
Let’s explore this highland part of Herzegovina!
What Is Blidinje Nature Park?
Blidinje Nature Park was established in 1995 and it spans over 350 square kilometers , which makes it one of the largest protected areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The park is also a home to Blidinje Lake , the Hajdučka Republika Mijata Tomića (a satirical “micronation”), and diverse flora and fauna unique to the Dinaric Alps.
Through the years, many of our adventures started from Blidinje and it’s really a great place for many activities, hiking and cycling especially. We still like to talk about our Blidinje to Ramsko jezero (Rama Lake) cycling tour that passed through the dense forest of this nature park. It was such an amazing experience, we’re looking forward to repeating it in the near future. If you are visiting Blidinje, think about visiting Ramsko jezero too.
Blidinje Lake
Blidinje Lake is one of the central landmarks of the park. It’s a seasonal glacial lake surrounded by meadows and mountain peaks. It’s a shallow lake, but it’s very scenic and perfect for photography, picnics, or just a walk in nature. A few years ago, at the beginning of our Europe wedding and elopement photography business, we had a photoshoot at Blidinje during the winter. These were the harshest conditions we have ever encountered, with the temperature dropping to minus 25°C. The Blidinje Lake was frozen, and we walked on it and captured some great material that day.
The Blidinje Lake is about 2.5 km long and 0.7 km wide , depending on the season
It often dries out partially during the summer
Near the lake, there is a memorial chapel and wooden sculptures made by local artists
Top Things to Do in Blidinje Nature Park
Blidinje Nature Park is a highland located between 2 mountains, so hiking is one of the best activities to do here. But it’s not the only one. Blidinje is a famous winter ski destination in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In fact, it’s much more popular in winter than during the rest of the year. Here are some of the top things to do in Blidinje.
1. Hiking and Mountaineering
Blidinje is a great base for hikers exploring the mountains that surround it:
Čvrsnica Mountain (2,228 m): home to Hajdučka vrata, a stunning natural rock arch
Vran Mountain (2,074 m): great for easier hikes and panoramic walks
2. Visit Hajdučke Vrleti and the Hajdučka Republika
This symbolic “republic” with its own currency (the “kubura”) is centered around a Hajdučke Vrleti motel and restaurant that is famous for local Herzegovina cuisine and a rebellious spirit. Hajdučke Vrleti is a place you don’t want to miss when visiting Blidinje.
3. Cycling and Off-Roading
We already mentioned that one of our best cycling tours was the one from Blidinje to Rama Lake. The area of this park is perfect for mountain biking and 4×4 exploration . There are numerous gravel roads and trails that will take you to spectacular viewpoints in a more adventurous manner.
4. Winter Sports
Blidinje transforms into a small winter resort with ski slopes near Risovac . There are ski lifts, rentals, and basic accommodations for snow lovers. Don’t expect a resort as large as in some European countries, but it’s perfect for a peaceful experience.
5. Explore Stećci Tombstones
The Blidinje Nature Park is home to many medieval tombstones (stećci), part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing. One of the largest necropolises in Bosnia and Herzegovina is located near the village of Dugo Polje. These tombstones will reveal more about the past of this stunning landscape.
Nearby Attractions
Blidinje Nature Park is located near some of the most famous attractions and places of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and in the section below, we’ll mention just a few of them.
Ramsko Lake (Rama Lake)
Ramsko Lake is located an hour’s drive away. It’s an artificial reservoir near Prozor-Rama that is famous for its emerald-green waters and small islands scattered on the lake. It’s a serene stop for relaxation or activities such as kayaking and cycling. If you visit Rama Lake, we suggest visiting the Franciscan Monastery of Rama-Šćit .
Makljen and Prozor
Historic mountain passes and war memorials from WWII, great for a scenic road trip and learning about the region’s turbulent history. The famous WW2 Battle on the River Neretva took place in these areas.
Mostar, Jablanica & Konjic
All within a couple of hours by car, these places offer a combination of Ottoman heritage , river canyons , and culinary stops (like Jablanica’s famous roasted lamb). If you would like to learn more about the Battle on the River Neretva, we suggest visiting Jablanica Museum, which is all about this fight between German WW2 forces and Yugoslavian partisans. If you want to enjoy more adventurous activities, we suggest joining the rafting on the Neretva River, which is organized near Konjic.
Flora and Fauna
Being a protected area, Blidinje Nature Park is also famous for its biodiversity. Here you can find:
White-bark pine (Pinus leucodermis) – a rare species native to the Balkans
Wild herbs , mushrooms, and endemic flowers
Foxes, wild boars , and birds of prey
It’s a great spot for wildlife watching .
Where to Stay and Eat
There is a lot of accommodation on Blidinje, and during our last stay, we stayed in the Pinery A-frame house, one of the best places to stay in Blidinje. Not all accommodation is available during the warmer part of the year, but you’ll easily find a place for yourself. Also, Hajdučke Vrleti is the central place to eat during the summer. During the winter, more restaurants are open near the ski slope, but Hajdučke Vrleti is still the most famous place for eating.
Hajdučke Vrleti – an iconic lodge with traditional food and cozy rooms
Pinery and Pinelle A-Frame Houses – stylish modern cabins perfect for couples or families
Ski resort accommodations – basic but well-located if you are visiting Blidinje in winter
