The man learns while he is alive. We discovered Laghi di Fusine, also known as Fusine Lakes, accidentally during our visit to Slovenia. We stayed in Kranjska Gora and explored Slovenia part by part. We have visited Bled Lake, Bohinj Lake, Postojna Cave, Triglav Valley, and many other places. But one day we decided to cross the border to Italy (there’s no border control since both countries are part of the EU) and find out what great places Italy holds for us. Using Google Maps we discovered these 2 stunning lakes, saw a few images, and immediately wanted to travel to this stunning landscape.
Located in the heart of the Julian Alps near the Italian-Slovenian border, the Laghi di Fusine (Fusine Lakes) is a natural attraction that attracts visitors with its crystal-clear waters and one of the most stunning alpine surroundings. We used to spend many of our days on Baćina Lakes in Croatia where we organized kayaking tours during summer. And somehow Laghi di Fusine reminded us of these lakes near our home. Once we reached Fusine Lakes, we were astounded by the beauty of both lakes and the surrounding landscape. We were thrilled and couldn’t get enough of the scene. One of the main reasons why Fusine Lakes are so special is the mountains surrounding them.
These mountains are rather high and really make the landscape remember. Špik and Mangart are the highest mountain peaks around the lakes and the whole mountain range makes a half circle that seems to hug both the lakes’ landscape as well as you when visiting them.
Laghi di Fusine (Fusine Lakes) are special because of:
- Pristine Alpine Beauty:
- These lakes are surrounded by dense forests and high mountain peaks (such as Špik and Mangart), the lakes offer stunning scenery throughout the whole year and all seasons.
- Glacial Origins:
- Laghi di Fusine were formed during the last Ice Age, they have crystal clear water and vibrant shades of green and blue, reflecting the surrounding mountains.
- Accessibility:
- Many trails connect the two lakes and surround them, making it easy for visitors of all ages and fitness levels to explore the lakes by hiking on these trails and enjoying different vantage points.
- Year-Round Appeal:
- Fusine Lakes are magical in all seasons, from vibrant and lush greens in summer to snow-covered serenity in winter. We visited them in Autumn, in the middle of October, and the colors of the surrounding landscape were captivating.

Best Time to Visit
Just like so many places in the whole of Europe, Laghi di Fusine is most visited during the summer months. We have visited them in the middle of October. It was a weekday and we were one of the rare visitors that day. The tourist facilities were not working also and we reckon that the Fusine Lakes were much more tranquil than on a regular summer day.
Still, although we immensely enjoyed serenity during our visit, we believe that these lakes are beautiful all year round. Here’s what to expect out of each period:
- Spring (April to June): Enjoy blooming flowers and moderate temperatures. Nature starts to awake and the air is full of all kinds of nice smells.
- Summer (July to September): Perfect season for hiking, picnicking, and boating. All facilities are open and there are many visitors at the Laghi di Fusine. It gets very warm during this period and the weather is usually nice and stable.
- Autumn (October to November): The most vibrant of all seasons. Colors add a magical touch to the scenery and you can see what it looks like from our images.
- Winter (December to March): A snowy wonderland perfect for winter sports and serene walks around the Fusine Lakes.
Flora and Fauna
The lakes are very rich in biodiversity and have many different plants and animals that occupy this unique landscape. What a nice place to live at.
- Flora: The surrounding forests are dominated by spruce, fir, and beech trees. Alpine wildflowers bloom in summer.
- Fauna:
- Look out for deer, foxes, and various bird species.
- The Fusine Lakes are also home to freshwater fish like trout.
