Best Locations for a Couples Photoshoot in Croatia
Ok, by now you already know that Croatia is full of picturesque spots, but there are some places that stand out as especially romantic and photogenic, and we will mention a few of these. There is a high chance that you’ll visit at least one of them during your stay in Croatia. If that is the case, and you like the idea of a photoshoot in Croatia, put it in your itinerary and book it as soon as possible. Most photographers do just one or two photoshoots per day.
1. Dubrovnik
We are starting this list of the best Croatia photoshoot locations with the most romantic destination in Croatia. We work a lot in Dubrovnik, and all we can say is that there is a pretty good reason why Dubrovnik is the most famous spot for all kinds of photography. Many couples choose to get married in Dubrovnik or visit it as part of their honeymoon.
Dubrovnik is full of medieval narrow streets, stone walls, and beautiful sea views
Sunset shots on the city walls or on the Srđ Hill
Dubrovnik is perfect for all kinds of photoshoots
2. Split
Split is yet another famous destination that many couples visiting Croatia choose to include in their itinerary. It’s somewhat different from Dubrovnik and has more Roman influence than medieval architecture, but it’s also a beautiful location. It’s the second-largest city in Croatia and a perfect base for exploring some of the most famous Croatian islands.
Diocletian’s Palace and Old Town offer great historical backdrops
Marjan Hill or Sustipan Park are great spots for panoramic views
Split offers a nice mix of ancient and beachside scenes
3. Hvar Island
We live just opposite Hvar on the mainland, and, after Dubrovnik, this island is the next location we travel to very often. Hvar is one of the most famous islands in Croatia, and it’s a perfect place for a Croatia photoshoot. Hvar is easy to reach via the ferry or catamaran from Split.
Hvar is famous for lavender fields (June/early July), narrow alleys, and beautiful nature
Sunset at the Spanish Fortress is a great option for some great panoramic views
Perfect for an island vibe photoshoot in Croatia
4. Plitvice Lakes or Krka National Park
If you’re a nature lover, here’s something for you. Apart from the previously mentioned locations that were mostly urban areas, Croatia is full of natural landscapes that are a perfect backdrop. We included Plitvice Lakes and Krka National Park on this list, but Croatia is full of all kinds of marvels of nature. There are also 8 national parks in total, and each of them offers a bit different backdrop.
Great options for couples who are into nature and the outdoors
Waterfall backdrops, forest paths, wooden walkways
Photoshoots at these locations are best in spring or autumn because of fewer crowds and lush vegetation
5. Zadar & Šibenik
Zadar and Šibenik are 2 cities that are not so far from each other and have somewhat similar looks and vibe, so we decided to put them together. Zadar is a bit larger, and it’s known as the place with the best sunsets in Croatia. Hitchcock said that, and we can’t but agree.
Zadar: Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun installation at sunset
Šibenik: Beautiful old town and small streets
Good options for a quieter stay and romantic vibes
6. Rovinj (Istria)
From Zadar and Šibenik we go to Istria, the largest peninsula in Croatia and one of our favorite parts of this country. We love Istria and look forward to every occasion to visit it. Istria is famous for gastronomy and wines, but it’s also a perfect location for a Croatia photoshoot. Hilltop towns in Istria are places you have to visit if traveling to this part of Croatia.
Venetian architecture and seaside vibe
Stone streets, pastel houses, and stunning viewpoints
Istria hilltop towns are great places for photoshoots too
7. The Islands (Vis, Korčula, Brač)
Finally, we are ending this list of the best places for a couple photoshoot in Croatia with the islands. We have already mentioned Hvar at the beginning of the list, but there are more than 1200 islands in Croatia. Of course, not all of them are good photoshoot locations, but you get the point. If you’re visiting Croatia, we suggest visiting at least one island during your stay. Croatia island hopping is one of the favorite activities of many visitors traveling to this stunning country.
Serene beaches, bays, and authentic settings
Islands in Croatia are perfect for barefoot shoots or picnic-style sessions
They are also great places for elopements and weddings, and many couples choose them as venues for such events
When to Schedule Your Photoshoot
The main thing about photoshoots like this is the fact that they can be done mostly early in the morning or late afternoon, usually around 1 hour before sunset. These periods are best because of the nice soft light and will result in great photos. If you’re booking a photoshoot in Croatia, opt for these periods only.
Best Time of Day:
Golden Hour : One hour after sunrise or one hour before sunset will provide the best results.
Early Morning : This is the best period if you want to avoid crowds in popular locations like Dubrovnik and get calm, serene, empty backgrounds
Best Seasons:
Spring (April–June) and Autumn (September–October) : Pleasant weather, fewer tourists visiting Croatia, vibrant and colorful landscapes
Summer (July–August) : Most people travel to Croatia in this period. It can get very hot and crowded, so early morning or late evening sessions are the best ones
What to Wear
Clothing is a very important aspect of each photoshoot, and it’s very important to dress appropriately. Here are some ideas:
Coordinate Outfits : Choose colors that go well with one another and avoid clashing patterns
Soft, Earthy Tones : Go well with Croatia’s natural and historic backgrounds
Comfortable Shoes : This is important, especially in towns with stone streets. Also, photoshoots might involve some walking around, so it’s best to wear comfortable shoes for the best experience.
Dress for Movement : Flowing and light dresses, linen shirts, and lightweight fabrics will look great in the photos
Props : Things like a picnic basket, hat, flowers, or even a glass of local wine can add a bit of additional vibe to your Croatia photoshoot
How to Choose a Photographer
Croatia is a famous destination for all kinds of photography, and you won’t have any trouble finding the best Croatia photographer for you. Our only advice would be to book a photographer as soon as possible, since many couples choose to do such a photoshoot. Here are some additional tips to think about:
Local Experience : Choose a photographer who knows the area and the best photo points
Portfolio Style : Think about whether you prefer candid, posed, editorial, or documentary photography.
Communication : This is one of the most important aspects of each photoshoot. A photographer who guides you through the process and helps you feel comfortable makes all the difference
Package Options : Many photographers offer mini sessions (usually around 30–60 min), but these can be easily customized according to your wishes
Tips to Make the Most of Your Photoshoot
As we slowly reach the end of this article, let us share a few final tips before you head out and make some photo memories:
Be Yourselves : The best photos are the ones that capture genuine connection and emotion. Don’t mind the camera and have fun
Trust the Photographer : They know the best places and angles, so don’t worry about that either. Just enjoy the process
Plan Ahead : If you want to include something like outfit changes or travel between further locations, let your photographer know before so you can make a customized plan together
Have Fun : This is the most important thing of any photoshoot. Just have fun, it’s easy
Combining a Photoshoot with an Experience
Your Croatia photoshoot can last for an hour, and that would be perfectly fine. You can expect to end up with around 50-70 photos in that timeframe. Many photographers include even more, so make sure to check the number of photos you’ll get before making a booking.
You can also make your photoshoot in Croatia last for a whole day and add many different locations and experiences to it. Think about it, here are just a few ideas:
Take a private boat ride around the islands
Hike together to a viewpoint and end up with great panoramic shots
Have a picnic in a vineyard or lavender field
Explore a medieval old town hand in hand
Before You Book a Photoshoot in Croatia
We don’t count the photo sessions we’ve done so far, but there were more than 500 in the past decade. If you are visiting Croatia as a couple, make sure to think about a photoshoot and put it on your itinerary.
