When we are not roaming around and discovering and exploring Croatia (and other countries), we are in the wedding and elopement photography and videography business (you can find us under the Love and Ventures name online and on social media). And we have been pretty much living like this for the past decade. The camera is always with us, no matter if we shoot weddings or outdoor places. And that is one of the reasons why we have decided to write about the Dubrovnik proposal in this article. We’ll even make a whole series of articles about couples traveling to Croatia for any reason.
We have been working with couples all around the world, and it’s really rewarding job. In this period, we have shot and helped to plan countless proposals in Dubrovnik, and this article will be all about it. Dubrovnik is the single most famous location when it comes to proposal in Croatia. It’s the most romantic city in our country, and there are not so many locations that come even close to it. Dubrovnik is also very photogenic and the best photography backdrop you can find in Croatia.
This guide will cover all the basics about planning a romantic Dubrovnik proposal , including the best locations, creative ideas, photo tips, and local planning advice. Finally, we’ll put the link to our work in case you want us to document your proposal moments in Dubrovnik (or anywhere else in Croatia).
Why Propose in Dubrovnik?
We already answered part of this question in the introduction. Dubrovnik is simply Dubrovnik. The most famous place in Croatia. The ultimate medieval city in Europe. The Game of Thrones filming location. The city is engulfed in history. Dubrovnik is perfect for many things, and it’s the most commonly chosen place for elopements, weddings, and proposals in Croatia. Dubrovnik is a unique blend of sea views, ancient architecture, and secluded places that make it a dream proposal destination.
UNESCO-listed Old Town with romantic, narrow, and secluded alleys
Stunning Adriatic Sea views from every angle
Rich history and cinematic beauty
Beautiful weather for most of the year
Great accommodation for couples
Amazing romantic activities to enjoy with your partner
Best Proposal Spots in Dubrovnik
Ok, now that we have let you know a bit more about why Dubrovnik is so famous when it comes to proposals, let’s go through some of the most famous Dubrovnik proposal locations. If you come to Dubrovnik, you’ll notice that it can get very crowded. That’s the only thing we dislike about Dubrovnik, even though we get it. It’s a popular place everyone wants to see and experience. Just get along with it.
Later in this article, we are also going to share a few tips about how to deal with the crowds when it comes to proposal in Dubrovnik. Let’s start with the best proposal locations in Dubrovnik.
1. City Walls at Sunset (or early in the morning)
We are starting with the city walls, the best location with a view of the Adriatic Sea and the Old Town. You can expect city walls to be somewhat crowded, so it’s best to time the proposal early in the morning or later in the afternoon, near the closing time. Proposing on the Dubrovnik Walls requires some planning and good timing, but it’s doable.
Best at sunset for stunning golden light
Requires an entrance ticket and some walking to the best spot
We suggest getting a Dubrovnik Pass so you can visit the Dubrovnik Walls and many other locations for the price of only the Dubrovnik Walls entrance
2. Komarda Beach
Komarda Beach is one of our favorite locations for a Dubrovnik proposal. It’s a piece of the coastline located beneath the Lazareti (ancient quarantine of Dubrovnik) and has a stunning view of Lokrum Island and the Old Town walls. We prefer early morning proposals in this location, especially if proposing in summer.
Quiet place and less touristy than Banje or Buža
Perfect for an early morning proposal in Dubrovnik
Combine it with a Dubrovnik photoshoot for an even better experience
3. Mount Srđ Viewpoint
Mount Srđ is a great place for both morning and sunset proposals. The only difference between them is the fact that Srđ is a bit more crowded during the sunset period since it’s the favorite location for anyone looking to enjoy one of the best sunsets over Dubrovnik.
Perfect for a proposal with stunning panoramic views
Can be combined with a private picnic
You can also book a dinner at the Panorama restaurant and enjoy some time together after the proposal
4. Lokrum Island
Lokrum Island is just a short boat ride from the Old Port. It’s a small island and a nature reserve with botanical gardens, peacocks freely roaming around, and stunning sea cliffs. It’s a bit more peaceful location in the Dubrovnik area, and we suggest you visit it if coming to Dubrovnik as a couple.
Romantic and peaceful
Combine it with a private boat ride or picnic
Propose by the Benedictine Monastery or on the cliffs
5. Pile Gate Port
Pile Gate Port is a place located just underneath the Fort Lovrijenac. It has a nice view of the city walls that serve as a great backdrop, and it’s a good location for both a morning and a sunset proposal in Dubrovnik. Fort Lovrijenac is another great option that requires a bit more walking, but it’s worth it.
Easily accessible
Relatively quiet location, especially in the morning
Stunning backdrop
6. Park Orsula
And we end this overview of the best proposal locations in Dubrovnik with Park Orsula, a beautiful place located a bit outside of the city. The great thing about Orsula is the fact that it can be privatised, so you know that no one is going to ruin your special moment. Most of the couples who have a proposal at Orsula Park choose to combine it with a picnic.
Perfect for sunset or twilight proposals
Romantic, quiet, and surrounded by nature
Great to pair with the picnic
Proposal Ideas in Dubrovnik
We believe that you have found at least one location among those we mentioned in the section above. Still, we have a few more ideas for your Dubrovnik proposal if you want something out of the ordinary.
1. Private Boat Proposal
We have had a few sailing and boat proposals so far, and they are absolutely amazing. Even if you don’t want to propose on the boat in Dubrovnik, we still suggest you book a private sunset boat tour if you’re visiting Dubrovnik as a couple.
Champagne and music on board
Propose at sea with the Old Town in the background
2. Surprise Photoshoot
Book a local photographer under and ‘sell it as a regular couple’s photoshoot in Dubrovnik. And then surprise your partner mid-session with the proposal. This way, you get the proposal photos and the usual couple’s photos. Win-win.
Great way to capture authentic reactions
Can be done at multiple locations throughout the city
Photographers can help plan the moment
3. Dinner Proposal with a View
You can also reserve a table at a rooftop or seaside restaurant. Dubrovnik is full of these. Staff can even help you organize the whole thing.
Choose any restaurant with a nice atmosphere and view
Coordinate with the staff for champagne, flowers, or cake
4. Scavenger Hunt or Custom Tour
If you want to do something different and think out of the box, you can also create a romantic scavenger hunt around the Old Town that ends in a proposal.
Include favorite memories and pair them with Dubrovnik locations
Dubrovnik Escape Room is also a great experience for couples
5. Proposal on a Hidden Terrace or Airbnb Balcony
Finally, if you rent a nice place for your trip, you can have a proposal in a private apartment with a view of the Old Town or the sea . We just came back from shooting an elopement at a secluded old villa with an amazing terrace and a view. Book a stay like this, even just for a night, and have a proposal there.
Intimate and personal
Easily customizable
The most romantic things to do in Dubrovnik
A proposal is just the beginning of a possibly great story, and even though it will probably be the most important and most emotional part of your stay in Dubrovnik, there are still many things you can do as a couple there to make the whole experience even better. Boat charter companies with engagement packages
Best Time of Year and time of the day to Propose in Dubrovnik
We already mentioned that Dubrovnik can get pretty crowded, especially during the summer. That’s one of the reasons we prefer early morning proposals in Dubrovnik. The city is almost empty then and it’s easy to get great photos. Sunset hours are also great, but most of the proposal locations in Dubrovnik will be crowded at least to some extent.
Here’s what to expect when it comes to different periods of the year:
May to June and September to October : The best weather, fewer crowds compared to July and August, but still crowded
July and August : Warm but very busy. We strongly suggest an early morning proposal at this period or choosing locations that can be privatised, like Park Orsula
Winter : Peaceful and romantic, but some services may be limited
Tips for a Stress-Free Dubrovnik Proposal
Finally, we are going to end this Dubrovnik proposal article with a few final tips for a stress-free experience:
Scout the location or ask your planner/photographer to help you choose the best one
Have a backup plan in case of crowds or bad weather
Bring or buy a ring box that fits in your pocket
Think about what you’ll say , even if you want it to be spontaneous
Celebrate afterward with a dinner reservation or special activity
Don’t be nervous, everything is going to be just fine
